Classmates at one of the city's girls' schools are snapping up raffle tickets that could enable them to meet their pop idol.

The pupils at Belle Vue Girls' School are hoping to get the chance to meet Abrar ul Haq, the Pakistani singer, when he visits Bradford at the end of this month.

The singer is in Bradford as part of a drive to raise £5 million for his adopted charity, the Sahara for Life Trust, which is trying to fund the building of a hospital in the Narowal district of Pakistan.

The school has agreed to take part in the fundraising effort and is selling the raffle tickets for the charity.

As well as items of Abrar ul Haq memorabilia, the top prize in the raffle is the chance to meet the star in person. He will pick the winning name out of a hat on Wednesday, October 30, then sneak into the winner's lesson to surprise her and her classmates.

He will then talk about his charity work to a group of sixth formers.

Hal Michaels, assistant head teacher, said: "To the utter consternation of our girls, he will not be performing any of his hits, as this isn't about his pop idol status. We didn't want this to interfere with our students' education at all, and are therefore taking this opportunity to further our girls' understanding of what active citizenship really means. By Abrar talking to our students rather than singing to them we will achieve a lot more."
