A well-known former councillor and lifelong supporter of the Labour party has died.

Ena Hey, of Wibsey, served as a Labour councillor for Queensbury ward for four years from 1990. She died on Monday after a long illness.

Mrs Hey was born in Briggs Street, Queensbury, in 1928. She attended several schools in the village before going to Keighley Girls' Grammar School, which she left aged 14. She joined the Labour Party around this time.

After leaving school she worked in the office at Black Dyke Mills, Queens-bury, and when she was 17 she met her husband John, a detective sergeant in the then Bradford City Police.

The couple married at Queensbury Church, Peel Street and had two children Tim, now 53, and Max, 43.

The family lived in several areas of Bradford and Mrs Hey was active in various branches of the Labour party.

When her husband retired the couple bought a restaurant business at Halifax Road, Shelf. Later they provided bed and breakfast accommodation to stars appearing at the Alhambra Theatre, where Mrs Hey had previously worked as the manager's secretary.

Mr and Mrs Hey also owned a guest house on Morley Street for eight years.

Mrs Hey was elected as a councillor in 1990 and served as vice-chairman of the housing committee and the special educational needs committee and on the education committee.

Before she died, she said she had always had the ambition to be a councillor but wanted to wait until she could give her full commitment

A celebration of Mrs Hey's life will be held on Monday at Scholemoor Cemetery at 2pm. Transport will be available from Queensbury. For more information ring H Bates funeral directors on 01274 880244.
