Andy Gray is being groomed into a goal-scoring midfielder.

City boss Nicky Law (pictured) wants to use Gray in the link role behind the strikers to inject the spark that has been lacking in recent matches.

Eoin Jess top-scored from that position last season with 14 goals, including 11 by November. And Law may put the onus on Gray to offer that same cutting edge drifting in and around the penalty area.

He said: "It's something we are trying to address this week. There isn't an obvious goalscorer from midfield in the Jess mould. When Jess was here he was probably the only one who did that and we need to get someone else who can play that position. Gray might be the man if he is playing down the middle.

"He played tucked in a little bit at Portsmouth and did quite well so perhaps he can do it. He likes to get forward and will go and get in the box."

Winger Gray has hit three goals so far, already his most prolific season, having scored only one in five years at Nottingham Forest.

He had more shots than any City player in the 0-0 draw against Derby but failed to hit the target. Law added: "We don't look like we are going to get beaten. But equally we don't really look as if we are going to score and that's something we have to change.

"You saw in the Leicester and Portsmouth games that we were as good as them until they scored. But when you are on top you have to take advantage."

Injury doubts Robert Molenaar and Wayne Jacobs are both hopeful of being fit to face Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday. Neither have trained since the weekend.
