Around 3,000 people have demanded action from the police and Bradford Council after another pensioner was mugged in broad daylight.

Residents in Undercliffe say at least 14 women in their 70s and 80s have been mugged and robbed in the last few weeks and say something must be done.

Police are investigating five incidents, but residents claim other pensioners have been attacked and are too afraid to report them.

Great grandmother Rose Gallagher, 90, was in a stable condition in Bradford Royal Infirmary today with a broken arm and extensive bruising after being battered in the worst incident by a thief who snatched her bag.

Police are still investigating her attack and four other thefts from elderly women in broad daylight within four days. They do not believe the attacks are connected.

Mrs Gallagher, of Otley Road, was robbed at a bus stop where she was waiting to travel to Bradford to collect her pension. In another incident an elderly woman was dragged along the road, still clutching her bag. The latest attack was on Saturday afternoon in Welham Road, off Otley Road, where an elderly woman's purse was snatched. Police confirmed they were linking it with two other attacks in the area.

Residents believe elderly women are being targeted because there are four homes and sheltered housing complexes in the area.

Now the Otley Road Tenants and Residents Association aims to present the 3,000-name petition and is organising a mass rally in Centenary Square before next Tuesday's Council meeting.

Association member Terry Patten said they were pressing the Council for CCTV and better facilities to keep young people off the streets. They have also asked West Yorkshire police for more officers to patrol the area and back up their community officer.

Mr Patten said: "Although we have started the petition in Undercliffe, we know this is happening all over the district. People may want to start their own petitions and join in. We are also asking people from other areas to join the rally and we are trying to organise some of the victims to come along."
