A pupil at Oakbank School has been appointed as poet in residence.

The year ten pupil was appointed to the new post -- the first in the school's history -- after he impressed teachers and pupils with a poem about how he is trying to stop mis-behaving.

Kamran Houssain, 14, from Keighley, is now Oakbank's official poet.

He said: "I was a bit bored so I just thought I'd try something different.

"There wasn't any point doing what I was doing before so I thought I'd give it a go. I haven't really written anything like this before.

"I'm quite pleased to be the school poet and I haven't decided what I'll write my next ones about, so I'll have to think about it."

Kamran read his poem to an audience of 60 pupils and 20 teachers last Thursday, as part of the school's national poetry day event.

The poem is straight from the heart and is an honest account of Kamran's behaviour and why he is trying to change.

It reads:

"I can be good sometimes

But I can be bad

Some times I get mad

Or even go hyper or

Even get cocky.

I have an attitude problem."

It ends: "Suddenly I got mad

But after a short while I got

sad

So I gave up being bad and

tried to be good."

Oakbank teacher Dave Hoyle said: "The poem is raw. It is very honest and powerful. We're really pleased with Kamran.

"He's really trying to change his behaviour and he'll be an excellent school poet.

"He's been commissioned to write three poems over the rest of the year on a school-related theme. He can write anything about school life.

"We just thought it would be something different and it's a good way of recognising Kamran's efforts."
