Guiseley 2
Altrincham 1
GUISELEY once again showed their Jekyll and Hyde character following a battling FA Cup performance which saw them beat Premier Division Altrincham with a dreadful display at Witton Albion on Tuesday which saw them lose 5-0.
Saturday's result brought great joy at Nethermoor as Neil Parsley's men showed great determination and application to overcome a team from a higher division.
They made progress to the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup and took the club's total winnings from this year's competition to £26,000.
They now face a home tie on October 26 against Dr Marten's Premier Division side Tamworth. Until recent months Tamworth were managed by Paul Hendrie, brother of former Barnsley manager John who lives in Menston.
Tamworth are currently lying fifth in their league and have a better record behind them than Altrincham so again Guiseley will have to lift their game if they are to progress to the first round proper.
Tamworth are also expected to come with some support - estimated at around 400-500 - so Guiseley will need all the local support they can get if they are to be cheered to victory.
Saturday was a significant match for young striker Ryan Senior. He has struggled to find his goal touch this season but in the fourth minute he set Nethermoor alight.
New 'keeper Chris Hill, a signing from Harrogate Town, kicked the ball upfield and Senior took it on the first bounce on the edge of the area. He produced an exquisite lob which left 'keeper Richard Acton stranded.
This seemed to lift Senior and he quickly found a yard of pace and a touch of aggression. Only the goalkeeper's face denied him a second as he tried another lob.
From the resulting corner Gary Shaw's header was scrambled clear but Mark Stuart was on hand to score from the rebound.
The Guiseley crowd, the biggest of the season at 428, was ecstatic.
Guiseley were putting in plenty of effort but their passing was poor and Altrincham were certainly not dead and buried. They proved this in the 70th minute when Peter Band headed home from a corner.
Guiseley were then relieved when a second strike was ruled out for a foul. When the going got tough Gary Shaw was a rock in the heart of the defence whilst Clive Freeman, against his old club, and Stuart used all their experience to keep things calm

What a difference a couple of days brings. Neil Parsley would have been driven demented by this inept display. Guiseley seemed to have no stomach for the battle for league points.
Parsley has a job on getting his boys to adjust to the reality of bread and butter league games.
As if the scoreline was not bad enough news 'keeper Chris Hill had to be stretchered off with a knee injury sustained in trying to prevent the fifth goal. Peter Sumner, who had come on as a substitute five minutes earlier and looked to be the one player desperate to turn things round, took over in goal.
