The Football Association have launched an investigation into Paddy Kenny's transfer from Bury to Sheffield United.

The Telegraph & Argus has learned that Graham Noakes, the Director of Football Administration and Refereeing, will look into the events surrounding the move of the former Bradford Park Avenue goalkeeper.

Despite earning a £1m price tag since his move from non-league football to Bury, Blades boss Neil Warnock recently signed the player for just £42,000.

This meant a pay-out of only £2,400 to the UniBond club courtesy of a sell-on clause in his contract.

But with Avenue expecting a higher fee, chairman Frank Thornton believes the "ludicrous" sum has harmed his side's chances of returning to the Football League.

"For a keeper of his ability to go for such a ludicrous sum is not right," he said. "Bury have a duty of responsibility for our asset and to let him go for such a small amount will harm our chances of going forward.

"It is only right the FA look into this."

Close rivals Accrington Stanley have bank-rolled a promotion push after picking up a £250,000 windfall from the move of former player Brett Ormerod from Blackpool to Southampton.
