A LIST of improvements for an Otley housing estate is to form the basis of an action plan.

Following discussions with residents of the Weston estate, suggestions have included more policing, better lighting, improved bus services and traffic calming measures.

People have also asked for better access to local services, the development of a tenants and residents association and a new community centre.

Councillor Clive Fox (Cons, Otley and Wharfedale), chairman of the Otley and Wharfedale Community Involvement Team (CIT) said that over the past 18 months some 50 issues had been raised including policing and health matters, public transport and housing.

"We have brought all these issues together under one action plan for the estate to see where we have got to and how we can take things forward.

"As a CIT, we have to recognise that some of these issues are outside our control.

"We cannot, for instance, require Metro to lower the bus fare into Otley much as we would like to and despite our calls for more policing, it is the police who determine their own operational needs.

"We can hope to influence some of these decisions and we will certainly have a significant input into everything within the city council's control."

Councillor Richard Lewis (Lab, Pudsey South), who is executive member for housing at Leeds City Council, said: "By working in partnership with the people on the Weston Estate the council hopes to find a way to improve services that suits residents, not one that has been imposed on them.

"The ultimate aim of the project is to improve the quality of life. It is hoped that through a better integration of services the estate will become a better place to live."
