SIR - This letter is for the attention of the person (or the people) who decided it would be fun to set fire to a Keighley Community Transport vehicle.

Not only did they set fire to the small vehicle used daily by the Dial-A-Ride service but the severity of the fire also destroyed a minibus parked nearby and damaged parts of the building.

I may be jumping to conclusions in presuming you can read and write but on the assumption that you can -- Why did you do it?

What pleasure did you get from this mindless act of vandalism?

Do you realise that what you have done has an effect on many people's day to day existence?

Would you like to tell the elderly lady who is blind and can only walk with the aid of two sticks why I cannot take her to her dental and doctor's appointments? Why the elderly lady frightened of falling if she travels by any other transport cannot go shopping for her food?

Why the gentleman with severe mobility problems due to injuries sustained in the war -- fighting for a future for you -- can no longer have his one and only trip out per week?

Why our wheelchair users who felt safe in our vehicles are now housebound? Why someone with a debilitating illness cannot get the physiotherapy that they need? Why the people who rely on us to transport them to and from day centres to make use of all the facilities available for them will now have to stop at home?

The service we provide is over-subscribed but we rarely turn people away.

We do our utmost to take them where they want to go. Now, because of your "little bit of fun", I find I am having to say "sorry we can't help you".

The two vehicles that you destroyed were both adapted to take wheelchairs and we will not be able to replace them.

Our drivers are dedicated to the people they transport and know they are helping to improve people's lives, even if only in a small way. The volunteer drivers give up much of their free time but they have all been left feeling very disheartened, all because you wanted to watch a fire start.

If anyone else reading this knows whom this letter is referring to then please tell the police, because until they are caught no one's vehicle is safe and the disabled and elderly residents of Keighley will remain indoors.
