No one will ever forgot what happened at Valley Parade on May 11, 1985, least of all former Bradford City idol Stuart McCall.

The midfielder's father, Andy, was in the crowd on the day of the fire disaster, as what should have been a celebration turned into one of football's worst tragedies.

Fifty-six people died and countless others suffered burns, including Stuart's father.

In the aftermath of the disaster, money raised was used to set up the Plastic Surgery and Burns Research Unit at the University of Bradford.

Ever since, the unit has worked hard to find ways of helping burns victims, earning Stuart's admiration.

Now, following his testimonial game in April, the former club captain is delighted to be in a position to give the unit a significant cash boost.

Tomorrow at Valley Parade, after City's game against his current club, Sheffield United, he will hand over a cheque for £15,000 to the unit.

The cash was all raised at his testimonial game against Rangers, another of his former clubs - much of it from a bucket collection organised by the supporters' club and from staff donations.

Stuart said: "I spent much of my career at Bradford City and a big part of me will always be with the club.

"When it came to my testimonial year, I was determined to do something to support the plastic surgery unit.

"I will never forget the care the doctors gave to my father after the fire and I think the research being done in Bradford is very important.

"I want to say a big thank you to everyone who helped to raise this money during my testimonial year."

Research registrars at the unit, Richard Karoo, Wee Lam and Jeremy Rawlins, will use the money to continue their vital work.

Mr Karoo said: "We have three projects up and running at the moment, one looking at wound healing, another looking at burns scarring and a third looking at how to avoid debilitating scarring associated with Dupuytrens Disease. We are essentially a charity and without donations like this we could not afford to continue."

Professor David Sharpe, consultant plastic surgeon at Bradford Hospitals NHS Trust and director of the Plastic Surgery and Burns Research Unit, said: "The unit carries out very important research to reduce scarring from burns and plastic surgery. We want to thank Stuart and others who were involved in raising this money."
