Westgate Redoubt 5 Keighley Albion 4 - Spectators flooded onto the pitch to join in the 'Battle of Westgate' as Albion's top of the table clash with the Wakefield side descended into a farce.

The referee lost control early in the game as he allowed a string of incidents to go unpunished, but as the Keighley side fought their way back into the game players and spectators became involved in a pitched battle and the game was abandoned.

Good early running from the Albion forwards was answered by strong attacks from Westgate who broke the deadlock with an unconverted try. They added a drop goal to secure a 5-0 lead which they held until the end of a scrappy first half.

There had already been a number of incidents which should have been penalised, but seemed to go unnoticed by the referee.

The second half continued in much the same way, but Albion scored two penalties through James Young, taking the Keighley side to within one point of the home side.

Victory looked to be well within Albion's reach as they looked by far the fitter side. With Westgate down to 12 men, an Albion victory seemed to be on the cards when a scuffle near the touch line resulted in Westgate's supporters spilling on to the field for a brawl.

The game was abandoned with 65 minutes. At the moment the result stands but it will be down to the Pennine League's management committee to make a final.

Tomorrow Albion entertain Illingworth in the Halifax and District Joseph Fee Memorial Trophy and the second team travel to Moldgreen in the league.

Silsden Park Rangers had a comfortable win at home over an under-strength Dudley Hill side, opening the scoring with a 40-yard sprint down the touch line from Matt Horne.

Cowling Harlequin 18

Rotherham 18

A sin-binning for Wayne Verity followed by a red card for Craig Verity -- which looked like a case of mistaken identity -- Cowling looked to be in for a drubbing.

Mark Wilson opened for Cowling with a penalty in the first ten minutes and Jimmy Anson was taken out off the ball with a brutal forearm smash by the Rotherham stand off, which was ignored by the referee.

Rotherham scored a very dubious try, which appeared to be two yards short, before a the sending-off of Craig Verity left Cowling with just 12 men for the remainder of the game.

With tries by Steve Beech and Mick Mckintyre and a conversion by Jody Sheppard Rotherham went into half time with a 14-2 lead.

Cowling Harlequin took stock at half time and came out all guns blazing with a superb forwards' try scored by newcomer John Hammond converted by Mark Wilson. Five minutes later Mick Mckintyre scored his second for Rotherham.

Intense play saw James Alderson denied a try for a double movement but man of the match Shaun Metcalfe scored a brilliant try which Mark Wilson converted to put Cowling back in the game at 14-18 down.

Some of the best rugby Cowling have played saw substitute and coach Johnny Sharkey chip forward and Alderson kicked on again before collecting to score a tremendous try and level the scores. Mark Wilson could not make the touchline conversion to snatch victory.

Cowling are at home tomorrow to St. Joseph's, kick off 2.00.

There is 12 hour speed pool competition at the Bay Horse Cowling on Sunday to raise money for Jason Ramshaw's Testimonial Year with a guest appearance by Chris Melling.

Keighley Town A 16

Odsal Sedbergh A 16

Young Danny Barrett inspired his young team mates as town grabbed a share of the points in an exciting and open game.

Town soaked up early pressure from the big Odsal pack with Barrett, Simpson, turner and Barnes working hard in defence before they took control with McNulty and Kazim directing the attack. Ryan Duckworth went over from a play-the-ball for an early try.

Allan Muff added a second try, but Odsal powered back and only last-ditch tackling kept them out. Simon McKay landed a 30-yard penalty for Town before Sedbergh finally got on the scoreboard to leave the half time score 10-6 to Town.

Defences of both teams were working overtime after the break with McKay kicking to penalties, but the visitors scored two unconverted tries to draw level at 14-14.

Twice they were stopped by ferocious defending and a fourth penalty gave Town a narrow lead, but Odsal grabbed a share of the points with a penalty in the dying seconds.
