Vandals have smashed windows, broken crockery and daubed graffiti in two attacks on Bailey Hills Tennis Club in Bingley.

Police suspect that after a minor attack last week, the vandals returned to the Cemetery Road clubhouse at the weekend to wreak more serious damage on the club.

Smiling faces and the phrase "West Side Outlaw!" have been drawn on walls inside the clubhouse.

The incidents have been reported to the police.

Club committee member, Arthur Baxter, said he believed the damage was caused by local people who know the area, because the club is hidden by trees and can only be entered via a quiet footpath.

Mr Baxter said: "This is a small, private club with a small membership. Like a lot of clubs we struggle financially and this is an expense we could do without.

"It's wanton vandalism, really. To repair the damage will cost around £200 but to secure the club so this doesn't happen again will probably cost around £1,000. Even then, these people will probably burn the place down."

The club, which has two hard courts and the clubhouse, has about 60 members. Mr Baxter has been involved with the club for more than 20 years and said about 20 members regularly use the courts.

The clubhouse is used for meetings and for providing refreshments for players after their matches.

Councillor Robin Owens (Cons, Bingley) said: "I have got every sympathy with any group like this that's trying to do a service in the town."

Inspector Nigel Cawthorne, of Keighley Police's community safety department, said the incidents had been reported and despite enquiries in the area the cuplrits had not been caught.

"We will continue to monitor the situation and we will take action when and if any more such incidents occur," he said.

"To people who run clubs like this these attacks are soul-destroying."
