Tessa Jowell Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport has re-appointed David Geldart, Director of PE and Sport at St Mary's RC School, Menston, for a second three-year term as Council Member of Sport England.

Sport England's primary role is to develop and maintain the infrastructure of sport in England.

It is also responsible for distributing over £250million per year of National Lottery funds to sport in England.

Sport England's key aim is to foster a healthier, more successful nation through increased investment in sport and active recreation.

David Geldart regularly works with various Government Departments advising on Health, Education and Sport.

He was one of the original Sport England Lottery Panel members before first being appointed to the Council in 1999.

Geldart was delighted with his re-appointment. He said: "It is a great honour and I look forward to working to develop sport in this country over the next three years.

"These are exciting times for sport; the wider values of sport are increasingly being recognised and it is important to build on that particularly with Government Departments. Sport England is undergoing considerable change at the moment; this is both challenging and exciting.

"I am keen to establish a clear measurable strategy for sport in this country and to gain appropriate funding."

Earlier this year Geldart was appointed to the New Opportunities Fund PE and School Sport Committee responsible for £250million of lottery money to fund the improvement of school sport facilities.
