Bradford Council's head of theatres, arts and festivals is to produce a report which will help decide the future of a controversial Shipley mural.

The mural, painted onto the end of a gable house on St Paul's Road in August, was created as part of Bradford's Capital of Culture bid. The painting, which overlooks Shipley pool's car park, celebrates the history and culture of the town and its German twin, Hamm.

The mural did not require planning permission and residents living in the area produced a 175-name petition protesting against it.

At the latest meeting of the Shipley Area Committee, Valerie Dean, of Wellington Crescent, said residents had not been given consultation from Bradford Council and many did not know about it until it appeared.

"We feel it's in the wrong place," she said. "It should be in the town centre, not in a Victorian residential area."

Mrs Dean claimed the mural was de-valuing property and called for it to be removed.

Committee member Councillor Chris Greaves (Con, Rombalds) said although he was not a fan it could be expensive to paint over.

John Botteley, the Council's head of theatres, arts and festivals, said he would investigate why there had been little consultation with residents regarding the mural and would compile a report.

Committee chairman Councillor Chris Heseltine (Con, Bingley) said the report would be presented at the next committee meeting in March when a decision on the future of the mural would be taken.

The mural also features images of Hamm and Shipley, including Salts Mill, Shipley Glen, the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, part of the German town's Hindu temple.
