Andrew Dunemann, who helped finance his close-season move from small-town club Halifax to city slickers Leeds Rhinos, has been handed his first chance to claim Ben Walker's old stand-off position.

The 26-year-old Australian lost out to rising England A star Danny McGuire when the number six jersey was handed out but he will be Rob Burrow's half-back partner when the Rhinos play Castleford in the traditional Boxing Day challenge at Headingley.

"The trial games will give me a good chance to show the Leeds fans what I can do," he said.

"It's a big club and most of the overseas players that come here have played for Australia.

"It might have come as a bit of a surprise when I signed but I know I can do it and have got the ability to match anyone."

Ironically, Castleford were first in the queue for the signature of the former North Queensland player once he made up his mind to quit the beleaguered Halifax but Leeds, looking to replace the disappointing Walker, got their man.

"Andrew Dunemann is someone I have admired for some time," said Rhinos coach Daryl Powell. "He is hungry and I am looking forward to seeing him in a Leeds jersey."

Chris Feather and Dave Furner will also make their first appearances for Leeds, who will give a fitness test to new captain Kevin Sinfield.

Castleford made up for their disappointment at

losing out in the chase for Dunemann by snapping up old boy Francis Maloney and Damian Gibson, both former Leeds players, from relegated Salford and they will both line up against their old Headingley team-mates on Thursday.

The Tigers also include forward recruits Jamie Thackray and Paul Jackson. Coach Graham Steadman will take the opportunity to blood some of his rising young pack stars including hooker Jamaine Wray and, prop Joel Nelson.
