Cookridge teenager James Dabill ran away with the final round in the Horsforth Motor Club closed trials championship at Home Farm on Sunday. He won the tenth round in the series and beat all the adult competitors with a superb ride that cost just two penalties marks, lost on sections four and nine.

His younger brother Joe did not make the final cut after pulling leg muscles on one of the muddy sections in the dense woodland so the top three class A youths were James Dabill and British youth championship riders Ashley Smith and Sheffield youngster Lee Sampson on one of John Lampkin's Team GP Beta machines.

Cleckheaton's John Hillam topped the intermediate class on his 270 cc Beta while Mark Chippendale was the best of the over-40 brigade.

Ossett police officer Martin Lister took the novice prize from Sheffield's Willy Wood and Rawdon's Mark Forster. Ian Brogden also walked over a very strong Clubman category while Keith Normington, from Liversedge, headed Hartshead's Stuart Oughton in the over-40 easy course competitors class.

Roundhay's Carli Sherwin dropped out of the Christmas rush to ride her Beta machine to a top 12 finish in the clubman class.

Organiser Barry Fairburn set the event for four laps, and ten sections, and it was dry but very muddy. At least the hard working official, and his son Martin, who computes all the results, can now relax until mid-January and the club's next event.

Lampkin family get together

The entire Lampkin trials riding family get together for their annual action day at Howden Wood on Boxing Day in the Bradford Motor Club contest that brings together the cream of northern talent into conflict with Team Lampkin.

It will be a real family battle. John, James, Harry, and their cousins Dan and Ben Hemingway go head to head with world champion Dougie with one intent, to try and beat him in what could be his only UK appearance outdoors this year, and next.

Throw in Martin Crosswaite, Shaun Morris, Graham Jarvis and James Dabill, and a few other top local names and the competition will be red hot.

New GP Beta signing Sam Ludgate misses the trial. The 20 year-old electrical student heads for Post Hill to lay out the West Leeds MC trial and will not ride Beta until the Ilkley Motor Club annual New Year Trial at Dob Park on January 5.

I have 13 motor-cycle trials listed up to the year end so there is something for all skills and ages.

On January 4 all roads will lead to the Sheffield Arena for the opening round of the FIM World Indoor Trials Championship where somewhere in the region of 8,000 spectators will converge and hope that Dougie Lampkin kicks the new year indoor programme off with a win and those 20 points.

Somehow I think the title will be tougher to repossess this year, the Armada has watched, and learned these last two years.

Lacking an official entry list I would presume Graham Jarvis, Albert Cabestany, Adam Raga, Marc Freixa, Marc Colomer and Steve Colley will be on the cast list with Lampkin.
