A Lions club which has been operating for 40 years fears it may fold if it doesn't attract new members.

The Ilkley Moor Lions Club organises the town's annual Duck Race in May and the Bonfire and Fireworks Display, as well as contributing thousands of pounds each year to good causes in the area.

But at the beginning of 2003, the group is down to just 11 members, aged between 29 and 76.

Club secretary and oldest member Jim Shelton, pictured, is worried that, without an influx of new blood, the group will eventually fold.

He said: "The bonfire we have organised for 26 years now is a community event and is watched by about 4,000 people each year, some of whom see the spectacle from the moors. But we are desperate for more men and women to join us.

"It is lots of fun and friendship, with a bit of work. We all enjoy ourselves and do lots of good for charities. It would be a terrible shame to lose something like this."

Recipients include Cancer Research, Martin House Hospice for Children, Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Riding for the Disabled. No money is taken for administration.

The Lions, with their motto We Serve, are the largest organisation in the world with 1.5 million members in 190 countries.

They were formed by the late Queen Mother, while she was Queen Elizabeth, during the Second World War.

The Ilkley Moor Lions Club used to be the Whafedale club covering a wide area from Skipton to Harrogate, but changed its name three years ago to make it more localised.

They will accept members from anywhere. They do not have to live in Ilkley itself as long as they can become involved with the group's activities and social life.

Mr Shelton added: "People are travelling longer to work now and working harder, so numbers have been dropping.

"But the Lions is a good way to relieve stress and make new friends outside the workplace."

They meet every second and fourth Monday of each month at the Red Lion pub, Burley-in-Wharfedale, and would be delighted to chat to potential new recruits in the New Year who can help to save the club. Alternatively, ring Mr Shelton for a chat on (01943) 862352.
