Members of a WI whose naked calendar inspired a film are planning to organise a special screening of it in Skipton.

The women hope to raise even more cash for leukaemia research by selling tickets for the event.

And among the guests could be stars from the film such as Helen Mirren and Julie Walters.

The film, called Calendar Girls, was shot on location in the Skipton area last summer. It has been made by Buena Vista, part of the Disney empire, and is due to go on release this summer.

It is based on the story of Rylstone and District WI near Skipton who raised half a million pounds for the Leukaemia Research Fund when the calendar was published two years ago.

The women were led by Tricia Stewart of Cracoe, and Angela Baker of Linton, whose husband John died of leukaemia aged 56.

The WI now hopes to pack Skipton's Plaza cinema for a showing of the film, with a champagne reception.

Premieres of the film are expected to be held in Britain and America and will be attended by the film's stars, including Helen Mirren, Julie Walters, Annette Crosbie and Penelope Hilton.

But Mrs Stewart, 53, wants local people - including the 800 extras who took part - to have a chance of seeing a special showing.

The film relates how a light-hearted decision to strip naked for a calendar and raise cash for cancer research in the Skipton area went global.

The woman, almost all in their 50s and 60s, won worldwide praise for their daring venture and raised £500,000 for leukaemia research in memory of their friend Mr Baker.

Mrs Stewart said there was still the chance of a premiere in Skipton.

"When they were filming, one of their representatives went to visit the cinema to see what it was like," she said.

"But whatever Buena Vista decide about where the premiere will be, we want to hold a special show in Skipton.

"We've mentioned it to them already and we realise they will do what they think is best for the success of the film, but we must have a special showing in Skipton and I think we will be able to do it.

"It will be a wonderful occasion and we will be raising money for leukaemia research by selling tickets.

"We'll invite some of the stars and it would be great if they could attend."

A spokesman for Buena Vista said the film premiere of Calendar Girls would be in the summer.

"No plans for a venue have yet been made. A meeting will be held shortly to decide that," he said.
