Queensbury staged a gallant fightback after early injury blows to push Leigh Miners all the way in the second round of GMB Union National Cup before eventually losing out 30-14.

The National Conference Premier side opened the scoring with a converted try but stand off Paul Drake cut the arrears with a penalty.

The turning point came on the half hour when Bury lost hooker Simon Greenwood with an eye injury and wingman Liam Holmes after a clash of heads.

The Miners ran in three quick tries to close the half 24-2 up.

Queensbury opened up in style on the restart when Drake scampered over and added the extras but he then was forced to leave the fray with a damaged leg.

Bury refused to be disheartened and kept up the pressure with a try from full back Steve Eyles, converted by Carl Smith.

The game was held up for ten minutes when Bury forward Mark Craft suffered a neck injury and was unable to continue and the Miners then ran in a late effort against the run of play.

West Bowling substitute Shaun Fallon saved the day with a last-gasp try as his side sneaked

through 16-14 at Egremont Rangers. Bowling went behind to a converted try but centre Paul Gardner raced over and full back Peter Simpson converted to level the scores.

Simpson added another touchdown and the extras to put the visitors 12-6 up at half-time.

Cumbrian-based Rangers had the better of the second half and Bowling looked to be on the way out, trailing 14-12 when Fallon struck for the winner.

Bowling stand off Scott Pendlebury was named man of the match.

Odsal Sedbergh went top of Division Two following a 15-try romp against 11-man Moldgreen at Odsal Rec.

The Huddersfield outfit are a shadow of the team that graced the National Conference only a few seasons ago and although they displayed great courage and determination they were no match for a rampant Sedbergh side in which centre Steve Brown posted a hat- trick in the 72-4 hammering.

Johnny Alderson (2), Simon Knowles (2), Jerome Powell (2), Chris Walsh (2), Shaun Flynn, Mick Lofthouse, Bob Bahan and Ben Cousin joined the constant procession to the try line.

Thornton fully deserved to reach the quarter-finals of the Shipley Trophy with a cracking 20-12 win in the local derby match at home to Odsal Sedbergh A.

Sedbergh flyer Graham Harrison scored an early interception try and added the conversion, which sparked Thornton into life, and Steve Bland and Dave Williams crossed the whitewash. Darren Ellerton kicked one of the extras to put them in front 10-6 at the break.

Second row forward Ben Southgate powered over to increase the lead but Odsal livewire Lee Birkett then dived in at the corner.

Thornton's Phil Smith put the issue beyond any doubt with his late try and Ellerton made no mistake with the conversion.

Queensbury under-18s won an ill-tempered and scrappy game 8-5 at Doncaster Toll Bar in the Yorkshire Youth League. Queensbury's solo try came from Simon Parkinson while captain Tom Middleton punished the home side's indiscipline with two penalties.

Victoria Rangers under-17s picked up a deserved 16-13 win in a hard-fought game at Huddersfield.

Daniel Dixon, Karl Wroe and Benoit Rogers were the Vics try-scorers.
