A Yeadon man is under guard at a hospital on suspicion of murder after a woman's body was found in a quiet cul-de-sac.

The man, who police have not been named, is currently receiving treatment at Leeds General Infirmary and is under police guard.

The dead woman has been named as 42-year-old Gillian Oates, her body was found at her home on Sunnybank Court, Yeadon, just before noon last Thursday.

Concerned neighbours contacted the police after believing something was wrong.

Detectives are treating her death as a murder inquiry.

A police spokesman said: "A man is being held under guard at the LGI, where he is being treated for injuries he sustained.

"It is believed he will be there until early next week."

No details have been released on how she died and an inquest into her death is due to be opened shortly.

Forensic experts have been at the scene gathering evidence and the house, which is near to the Yeadon Tarn beauty spot, has been sealed off by police tape.

The tranquil residential area has been thrown into turmoil and neighbours have spoken of their shock at the tragedy.

One resident, who was too upset to be named, said: "It is absolutely terrible. I can't believe something like this has happened on our own doorstep.

"I would see her occasionally and would say hello, she has lived here for about 15 years. It is just shocking, you don't expect this type of thing to happen.

"Gillian was always smiling and cheerful."

Another described her as 'a lovely lady who was always helping people'.

"The street's in shock," he said. "We just can't believe this has happened. She will be missed."

Mrs Oates lived at the semi-detached property with her 48-year-old husband David, who runs a tailors shop on New Road Side in Horsforth.
