Construction company Totty has signed three more major contracts with leisure giant Whitbread.

The deals, worth a combined value of £5 million, will see the Bradford business work on a variety of projects for the firm.

It will help construct a Brewsters restaurant and Travel Inn hotel in Evesham, a Brewsters in Lincoln, and a Brewsters and Travel Inn at Norwich Airport.

The developments are all due to be completed in the first half of this year.

Last year Totty's relationship with Whitbread hit a major milestone when the firm revealed it had been awarded contracts worth more than £100 million by the company.

Mike Parkinson, managing director of Totty Construction, said: "These latest contracts with Whitbread will have the same high level of service as the first and second contracts eight years ago, in fact we are constantly striving to improve and update our service.

"This partnership is going from strength to strength."

The relationship between Totty and Whitbread began in 1995 with a Brewer's Fayre and Travel Inn development in Sheffield.

Other Totty clients include: Persimmon Homes and City Lofts.

At the end of last year the construction company was sold in a deal worth £23.3 million.

Totty is part of construction and development business Propencity, which was sold by Leeds-based parent company Peterhouse.

Peterhouse sold Propencity to Newco, a newly-incorporated company which was set up by the Propencity management team.

The deal saw Newco pay £18 million for Propencity, with other money going to pay off debts.

Peterhouse sold Propencity to concentrate on its support services operations.

A spokesman for Peterhouse said: "The construction operations of Peterhouse were a significant source of revenue and earnings.

"While the construction operations initially generated cash flows which were used to invest in growing the rest of the group, they returned modest profit margins and therefore the board implemented a strategy which focused on expanding the group's higher margin support services operations.

"In recent years, the board has successfully pursued its strategy of expanding its support services operations through a combination of organic growth and carefully selected acquisitions.

"These operations, particularly in telecommunications, power and rail infrastructure maintenance provide the Peterhouse Group with good margins and more predictable earnings."

Last September Totty announced another record financial year.

It reported pre-tax profits of £4.54 million in its results for the year ending December 2001.

Philip Brierley, Totty's chairman, said: "2001 was our ninth year of growth in profit and turnover for the group.

"The figures are a testament to our strategy of progressively improving the scope, quality and consistency of our products and services."

The firm also saw its turnover rise nearly £20 million from its 2000 results to more than £90 million.

The business, which was established in 1864 by William Totty, now employs more than 300 people.

It relocated from its head office in Greengates to new 20,000 sq ft purpose-built premises at Woodlands Park in 2001.
