Robbery witnesses who play a vital role in catching criminals will get support through a pilot project in Bradford.

Victim Support in West Yorkshire has teamed up with the force's Major Crime Unit for the Street Crime Project.

The scheme extends the help given to crime victims and witnesses by Victim Support by targeting people who see street crime.

At the moment, the police's Criminal Justice Support Unit Witness Care Bureau helps from the point where officers find out a case is likely to proceed at court.

The new service will fill the gap by getting involved from when the crime happens.

It can also offer help after the court trial, if necessary.

Inspector Jez Barrett, of the Major Crime Unit, said robbery victims and witnesses were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. "Many people who see a robbery take place, as well as robbery victims, understandably find the whole court process traumatic and bewildering," he said.

"The expertise provided by Victim Support can help guide and reassure them through this process, familiarising them with what to expect."

Victim Support can give advice about the criminal justice system and answer questions, as well as helping people through events like identification parades.

They can also attend court with witnesses and victims when they give evidence, and link to the existing witness support service, available in all magistrates and crown courts.

Insp Barrett said: "As a result of this new partnership with Victim Support we hope people will feel more confident and less likely to withdraw their evidence as court cases approach, due to feelings of anxiety."

The Street Crime Project will be piloted for four months in Bradford and Leeds before being evaluated.

Barry Measom, assistant director of Victim Support in West Yorkshire, said the organisation was very excited about the scheme, which links to the Government's Street Crime Initiative, focusing on the welfare of crime victims and witnesses.
