Staff and pupils at a primary school celebrated successful French teaching with a day of themed activities.

Nessfield Primary School, Keighley, decided to unite the whole school and enhance the pupils' French lessons with the educational day last Thursday.

Head teacher Sandra Antcliffe said: "It was a fantastic day. Everybody thoroughly enjoyed themselves and the children learnt so much about the French way of life, as well as practising their French.

"We will certainly make this an annual event."

The whole school entered into the spirit of the day. Staff and children adopted French names and kitchen staff dressed in traditional French costumes.

Everyone spoke French, with the pupils aided by word searches and fact files about France. They held boules and Eiffel Tower model-making competitions. Even parents were involved with a French geography quiz.

The school has taught the language for three years since former middle school teacher Ian Goldman joined the staff as a transition manager during the Bradford schools re-organisation. He thought the children would be able to pick up the language much easier and quicker by starting at a young age.

He said: "I have been amazed at how quickly the children have picked up the language and how enthusiastic they are about their learning."

Getting in the mood for French Day are pupils Nathan Stockdale, nine, Kelly Owlett and Alex Whitehead, both eight, and school cook Cath Pickles
