Guiseley stalled runaway leaders Alfreton Town's march to the UniBond Division One title with a superb 1-3 victory on Saturday.

The Yorkshire side added Alfreton to an impressive list of scalps they have taken this season as they continue to show scant regard for the formbook. It will set them in good stead for tonight's home game with fellow strugglers Ossett Town

Ex-Bantam Mark Stuart set them on the way when he fired home from Alan Bailey's right-wing cross in the third minute.

They withstood pressure while still foraging for openings in the first half but the home side finally levelled in stoppage time when Steve Johnson headed past Chris Hill from the edge of the six-yard box.

Early in the second half, Guiseley had a penalty appeal waved away after Bailey appeared to be shoved in the area, but that was their only bright spot as Alfreton turned up the heat. For a sustained spell they threw everything but the kitchen sink at the visitors.

They weathered that and in the 74th minute Dave Henry restored the lead after good work from Bailey, Stuart and Richard Chattoe. Eight minutes from time substitute Nathan Hay drove in a low centre and Alfreton's Darren Brookes turned the ball past his own keeper.

"It was an excellent result. There won't be many teams who take four points from Alfreton this season," said delighted Guiseley manager Neil Parsley.

"To be fair for 20 to 25 minutes of the second half they battered us. But we defended well and got bodies in the way and made some late clearances."
