When Steve and Jo White moved into their smart new home in a Bradford suburb they thought they had found an idyllic spot overlooking nearby farmland.

The pretty garden of their home on the Poplars Farm development, off Kings Road, Bolton, backs on to fields used to graze animals during the summer.

"We chose this home because it's really peaceful and quiet here. We wanted to settle down somewhere nice and plan our family," said Mr White.

But that peace was soon shattered when the couple discovered that gangs of trials bike and quad bike riders had adopted the fields leading down the valley from Bolton Woods quarry as a track.

Every weekend vans arrive loaded with bikes and dozens of teenagers spend up to ten hours a day tearing across the grass.

Residents of Drovers Way have been infuriated by the noise.

And retired couple Millicent and Carlton White told how a bike even ploughed into their garden fence after losing control on the steep slope.

"It is very noisy, very disturbing, and there is no way we can ever relax," said Mrs White. "We have a nice view from our garden, but the noise is so bad you cannot sit out. It's really upsetting for a lot of the neighbours."

Mr White, 33, said he had made repeated calls to the police and Bradford Council which owns part of the land.

"I don't know what can be done," he said. "The Council said they will put fences up but nothing has really happened. They don't seem to be interested.

"The police came down at one point which caused it to calm down for a while, but now it's as bad as ever again. Only people power is going to stop it."

Another resident, Juli Farrar, said the bikes were just the latest in a string of problems, such as travellers setting up camp nearby last year.

"The noise drives you mad, even inside the house," she said.

A police spokesman urged anyone with information to name and shame those responsible.

"Someone must know who they are and it is likely they are local to the area," he said. "They are a danger to themselves and other people in the vicinity.

"Anyone caught riding a bike illegally faces having it taken away from them."

A Bradford Council spokesman said officers were aware of the problem and were investigating.
