Rachel O'Connor reviews "Me and My Girl", at Guiseley Theatre until Saturday

WHAT a show! Rarely can an audience have laughed so much at a local production. What a joy to watch this extremely talented troop led by the irrepressible Peter Whitley.

The character Bill Snibson was surely written for him alone. What a star. What a performance.

He wrung every last drop of humour and pathos from a role that fitted him like a glove.

He was the epitome of the cockney wide boy but what a shock to the system of his new found well to do relatives when he inherited the country seat and title of Lord Hareford.

Whitley had the lot and how his fellow cast members managed to keep a straight face with the audience rolling in the aisles I do not know.

Valerie Pennett had to use all the experience and stage presence she has gained in a long career on the amateur stage to the full to avoid that pitfall.

She was brilliant as the Duchess of Dene and had an excellent foil in John Hudson as Sir John.

But this was not just a show of two or three stars - the whole cast excelled in this superb production by Louise Denison.

There was slick, perfectly timed comedy at every turn; excellent singing, superb dancing and so many cameo roles superbly done.

From Nicola Sloan as Sally Smith, through Caroline Cross as Lady Jacqueline to Michael Smith as Gerald Bolingbroke

From Alan Hughes as the all singing, all dancing solicitor to Graham Farnell as the Butler.

Even the acerbic Ann Robinson wouldn't be able to find a weakest link in this show.
