A school is urging the community to back its lottery scheme in order to fund a school minibus after its last one broke down.

Guiseley School needs to raise at least £4,500 a year to hire a minibus for use by school groups and is hoping to generate the cash through the Great Weather Lottery.

The lottery scheme means the community can take part and at the same time raise money for the school.

The school minibus broke down in January and the Parent Teachers' Association has managed to use its savings to hire a bus this year. It will cost £4,500 to lease the bus and the PTA is hoping to raise enough funds to hire another bus in the future.

Chairman Barbara Osborn said: "We have got one of the buses, the PTA had the money saved up to hire it. Having looked in to it leasing a bus seems a better option than buying one so we are using the money to do that. We have got enough for this year.

"The problems we have had in the past are the repairs and this way if it breaks down someone else has to fix it and we will get a replacement straight away."

The Great Weather Lottery allows people to pick their numbers and these are compared to temperatures in different countries.

The winner of the £10,000 jackpot is the person who correctly guesses the temperatures. It costs £1 a week to play and entrants have the chance to win up to five times a week. The school will get a third of the ticket costs.

Mrs Osborn is urging the community to join the lottery and support the school.

"You pick your numbers which will be measured against the temperatures in different countries. "
