Dyehouse workers at a major Bradford carpet manufacturing factory were on strike today - about a man who has never been employed by the company. The dispute, at Associated Weaver Carpets, Toftshaw Lane, stems directly from a labour supply agreement which states that when vacancies occur in the dyehouse, candidates are submitted by the union from a list of members who are out of work. The company recently rejected as unsuitable a candidate and the union is now questioning its right to do so.

Unemployment's downward trend in the East and West Ridings was halted last month when the total of wholly unemployed and short time workers rose by 2,859 to 28,000. In only Bradford and Dewsbury was there a drop in the unemployed and short time totals compared with the previous month.
