After a successful first year programme in which over 800 boys and girls from local schools were involved Otley RUFC's application for funding for the second year of the scheme has just been approved.

The programme run by Otley RUFC (and formerly the Wharfe Valley Trust) introduces team based sports into primary schools through TAG rugby and develops the game skills at secondary school level.

First team players Andy Brown and Paul Williams coach the youngsters in school organising regular tournaments to show off newly acquired skills.

The funding also enables training sessions for teachers and junior coaches to develop coaching skills.

SPORTSMATCH, the Governments Business Sponsorship Incentive Scheme for Sport and Physical Recreation, has awarded £5,500 to add to business sponsorship for the scheme from Otley Motors, Noberne Doors and Whites Concrete.

This is a great opportunity to build on the hard work of last year - to develop interest in the game and further skills.

It is hoped to continue this programme through to a third year and bring in further initiatives to take on the work and schools partnership from there.
