Crime-busting young thespians at Parkside School could soon become TV stars thanks to their affectionate spoof of the silver screen.

Drama students at the Cullingworth school have produced a humorous play about crime prevention that is a comic homage to American B movies. And the success of the stage show has impressed police so much that it could eventually be filmed for a video about tackling crime.

In the production crime is depicted as a living two-headed monster, played by Emma Brooks and Claire Partington, which tempts people into a seedy life of crime to help it survive and grow.

It is left to an unlikely heroine and an equally unlikely crime prevention officer, played by Leanne Mackie and Scott Dyson respectively, to save the day.

The play is the brainchild of the school's head of expressive arts, Mike Fleetwood, who used a personal experience as his inspiration.

He said: "I wrote the play in 1994 after my house was broken into, so it was a kind of reaction to that. The play won a crime prevention award over in Calderdale, where I was working at the time, and I thought it was time to revisit and revamp it with new issues like mobile phone theft. While the impression is very much tongue-in-cheek, the play does give out valuable advice on how to prevent crime, ranging from burglary to mobile phone theft."

He added: "West Yorkshire Police have been very interested in what we've done so far and there is talk of them looking for funding to have it filmed and distributed to various Neighbourhood Watch groups. We are also hoping to perform it during crime prevention week. We have performed it in school and we hope to take it out into the community."

The play features several songs that range from an energetic Crime Rap to the even less melodic yet suitable "cheesy" We've Been Robbed.

The new songs have been devised by Mr Fleetwood and head of music Will Mace.
