AMATEUR theatre group, The Arcadia Players, has linked up with Craven College to help with preparations for its forthcoming production of The Crucible.

The Skipton-based society will perform Arthur Miller's classic play at Skipton Little Theatre on May 22 to 24 and at Wakefield Drama Festival on May 28.

To help with rehearsals, Craven College has given the young thespians permission to use its spacious TV studio on the Aireville Campus for weeknight auditions and rehearsals.

In return, The Arcadia Players will help promote new performing arts courses being launched by Craven College. It is hoped future drama students will become involved with the theatre group, both as actors and backstage crew.

"We're absolutely delighted to be linking up with Craven College," said Players spokesman Alex Waddington. "The TV studio on the Aireville Campus is a superbly equipped rehearsal space that's perfect for our needs.

"Right from the start, the management at Craven College has been very receptive to our ideas and keen to work with us. As a new group, it's often a struggle to raise the funds to get theatre productions off the ground, so the free use of such an excellent venue is a massive boost for us."

The Crucible is set against the background of the Salem witchcraft trials of 1692, and deals with themes of fear, manipulation, deception and revenge and concludes with an emotional and moving climax.

Males and females aged 20 to 70 are invited to try out for parts. Previous stage experience is not necessary.

The group is particularly looking for a man aged 25 to 50 to play the raunchy lead role of ladies man John Proctor. Other parts include Reverend Parris, Rebecca Nurse, Giles Corey, Francis Nurse, and Tituba.

The play's director, Johnnie Ingram, said: "We're hoping to create a fresh new interpretation of The Crucible which brings to life the darker side of human sexuality and passion inherent to the action of the play."
