AN Embsay resident is seeking support from fellow villagers in his quest to have more traffic calming measures introduced.

After extensive consultation a "watered down" scheme was put in place in the village last year after agreement with the county council's area committee.

This included gateway features with stone setts, 30mph signs on Skipton Road, Brackenley Lane, Pasture Road and along Kirk Lane in Eastby, and widened footways and a traffic island at the end of Brackenley Lane.

Embsay-with-Eastby Parish Council felt the new scheme was acceptable.

However John Fidler, of Skipton Road, Embsay, has contacted the Herald criticising the current scheme. He said in his letter: "I seek to contact any residents of Embsay who share my concern at the speed some vehicles travel down through the village and particularly at the county council's abandonment of part of the traffic calming measure."

Mr Fidler said the scheme published in November 2001 included chicanes. "This part of the scheme has been abandoned for no good reason," he said.

County Coun Shelagh Marshall said she shared Mr Fidler's concerns and was going to meet the area traffic manager about the possibility of increasing traffic calming in the village.

"The scheme we have now is a very watered down version and I believe it is not enough."

Ken Martin of North Yorkshire Highways confirmed a chicane had been earmarked near the railway entrance, but had not been included in the work.
