One day in the lives of a family in 1933 during a drought in the American Midwest.

That's the setting for the latest play from Keighley Playhouse as it stages the American classic The Rainmaker.

But the March 10-15 production is said by producer Mike Boothroyd to be far from a depressing night out.

"It's a gentle comedy with some strikingly poignant moments that should leave a lump in the throat," he says.

As the play begins, the Curry family are in despair because they cannot marry-off their only daughter. "They encounter more turmoil following the arrival at the ranch of the charismatic Bill Starbuck," says Mike.

Starbuck promises to bring rain within 24 hours in return for the payment of $100.

"He creates rifts in the already fragile family relationships and offers the daughter a glimpse of the world outside the Midwest."
