A mother-of-two is demanding traffic calming measures along her street after cars twice ploughed into her front garden.

Shocked Fiona Nolan, pictured, said she couldn't believe her garden had been hit twice in six weeks in Moorhead Crescent, Nab Wood, Shipley.

Both incidents happened at around tea-time when traffic congestion was at its worst.

Today she said she had banned her children from playing outside until action was taken to deter speeding motorists along Moorhead Crescent and its junction at Ashfield Road.

Mrs Nolan, whose children are Jack, four, and Georgia, two, said: "It is really frightening. It was such a shock to have it happen the first time and when it happened again a couple of weeks later, I thought that something ought to be done before someone is killed. There is a history of accidents along this road and junction but it is getting ridiculous."

More than 70 names have been collected on a petition, including parents worried about dropping off and collecting their youngsters from Ashmoor nursery.

Angela Chattaway, team leader at the nursery, said: "Speeding traffic is a major problem here. The cars come down this road very quickly and we have seen quite a few accidents. The amount of traffic here is ridiculous considering this is supposed to be a residential area."

Councillor David Ford (Green, Shipley West) said action had to be taken and the volume of traffic was worrying.

"It is a dreadful junction with traffic coming down at speed. It is not too bad during the day but at rush hour there is a lot of traffic and the situation is very bad. I would back a campaign to introduce calming measures."

A Council spokesman said it was committed to improving safety on residential roads and welcomed the views of residents. "All requests for traffic calming measures are fully investigated by assessing the volume and speed of traffic and the number of road accidents.

"The roads concerned are considered for available funding by the area committees and the Council executive."
