Rugby League and boxing joined forces when Keighley Albion and the town's amateur boxing club packed the Bankfield Hotel for a fundraising dinner-boxing show.

There were ten superb fights during the evening with Keighley boxers taking part in eight of the bouts -- and five were victorious.

Keighley's 'nap hand' of winners saw wins for Leon 'Clogger' Clegg and rising schoolboy prospects Nathan and Josh Hustler, Liam O'Reilly and Karl Harper.

Former Yorkshire and Humberside Champion Clegg, who is unbeaten this season, added to his healthy reputation when he stopped Harrogate's tough Phil Clarke, who was eventually sent crashing to the canvas for the first time in his career following a superb right uppercut late in the third round. The manner of Cleggs win also earned him the new Garry Whittaker Memorial shield, awarded in memory of one of two Keighley boxers who died tragically last year.

The 'best novice' award went to O'Reilly who produced a polished performance on his debut in the ring to out-point Rotherham's Ben Senior.

Despite the presence of one of Britain's finest fighters, Herol 'Bomber' Graham in the Rotherham cornefr Keighley made it a double after Karl Harper won a particularly tough and bloody contest over Lee Appleyard of the South Yorkshire club. Brothers Nathan and Josh Hustler were also in the winning frame, with Nathan beating the much taller Kamran Samir of Bradford Police by knocking off his stride with left hooks. Josh, who is unbeaten, also claimed a clear points decision over Jamie Lee of Wombewell.

Despite being beaten Adam Malinowski against Richard Gaskin (Wombwell), Ali Hussain against Luke Smedley (Sheffield) and Martin Lynch against Nasar Khan (Bradford) all played noble parts in lively contests. Lynch a former England Schools finalist is now a senior light-welterweight and was having his first fight for a decade.

Also on the bill Bury's Josh cole outpoint4d Sheffield's Brad Hinkler at schoolboy level and Sheffield senior welterweight Matthew Hancock outpointed Hull's Mick Dyson.

Among the audience were some of Keighley Albion's finest former players including former Great Britain star Terry Hollindrake and Keith Dixon together with former British, Commonwealth and European Heavyweight Champion Richard Dunn.

Auction items included Dixon's 'Old Trafford Cougar Shirt' signed framed photographs donated by Richard Dunn and signed boxing gloves donated by Sir Henry Cooper, helped raise over £1,000 from the auction alone.
