Bingley Show is one of the key events on the town's annual calendar. When it was held at Myrtle Park it not only attracted visitors to the show but also gave them a reason to come to Bingley and look around, giving local businesses an important boost.

It was very unfortunate when a problem with access to the park prompted the organisers to switch the venue to the Bradford and Bingley sports ground in Wagon Lane. Town-centre traders, pubs and cafes were far from happy about it. The regular visitors to the show were disappointed not to be able to look forward to spending time in the attractive riverside park.

As it transpired, the move was merely hypothetical. The 2001 event had to be cancelled due to the foot-and-mouth epidemic and last year's show couldn't take place because of access problems at the sports ground.

So there is bound to be considerable relief and even delight that the show is on again this year, and back at its home ground apparently for the foreseeable future thanks to a permanent access arrangement organised by Bradford Council with practical help from Amec, the company building the relief road.

It is particularly good news that the show is to be held on a Sunday. Many people in previous years have been unable to enjoy the attraction because it took place in the middle of the working week. The switch to the weekend will attract a whole section of potential new visitors and will also help to avoid the working-day aggravation of roads congestion caused by the show traffic.
