A chip shop owner fears major roadworks at weekends on a main route in Bradford will cripple his business.

Raymond Gawthorpe, pictured, said his weekend earnings would be hit when Bradford Council closes off the whole of Odsal Top roundabout for roadworks next month.

Mr Gawthorpe claims his takeaway business at the top of Cleckheaton Road will be marooned when resurfacing work starts in June, lasting three weekends.

He is even considering shutting up shop while the work is on because no one - except for hungry roadworkers - will be able to get to him.

"I earn more on a Friday night and Saturday lunchtime than the rest of the week put together," he said.

"It's going to knock my takings. I'm having to weigh up the costs of whether it'll be worth staying open or not on those weekends. I'm only a small business and I can't afford to lose trade.

"I can't turn round to my landlord and say I can't pay my rent because the Council shut the roundabout. I've still got to pay it.

"I've spoken to the Council about this and they didn't seem interested."

A Council spokesman has confirmed roadworks are scheduled for the first three weekends of June, closing off the roundabout and the on-off slip roads from the A641 Rooley Lane, Halifax Road, Cleckheaton Road and Odsal Road.

Work will start from 7pm on Fridays and go through until 4.30am on Mondays.

The only time this will change is when the Bradford Bulls play at home on Saturday, June 21, when an access lane will be opened.

Mr Gawthorpe said it was not fair the Council was willing to open a lane for the Bulls game and not help him.

"They are willing to open the road for six hours for the Bulls game but not for me," he said. I've as much entitlement as they have.

"The Council should either shut it and keep it shut for everyone or leave at least one lane open at any time."

Councillor Dave Green (Lab, Odsal) has also accused the highways department of ignoring the concerns of residents living on estates around Odsal Top and in Wibsey.

He said: "A lot of people living in that area are going to be inconvenienced. It'll be total chaos with excessive rat-running and people not being able to get to their own homes without taking detours. People are going ballistic and the Council just seems to be ignoring them."

A Council spokesman said: "Re-surfacing work will take place in the first three weeks in June and we will be releasing more information nearer the time."
