Organisers of the Oxenhope Straw Race this summer hope to double the £5,000 they raised at last year's event.

The race, in which competitors in fancy dress carry a bale of straw around the village and call at pubs along the route, is on Sunday, July 6

Race chairman Tim Sander said: "Last year we managed to raise in excess of £5,000, which was incredible seeing that a straw race did not happen the previous year due to the foot and mouth outbreak.

"We aim to double that this year and to have as much fun along the way as possible."

The Dog & Gun, one of the pubs on the route, is holding a Straw Race Sportsman's Dinner on June 26, with Allan Clarke, ex-England and Leeds United footballer, as the main speaker.

And Fitness First, in Keighley, is hosting a ladies' night in the autumn to raise money for the event.

The year culminates in November when the money is handed out to various charities.

Race entry forms are available on the Straw Race web site -- www.strawrace.co.uk -- or by phoning 01535 646236.
