Shipley traders united last night to oppose new traffic proposals for the town. In simple terms they told the planners: "Hands off Shipley". At the end of a sometimes stormy meeting during which they gave a rough ride to Mr David Gill, West Yorkshire County Council's Western Division traffic engineer, whose "baby" the proposed scheme is, they voted unanimously for a much less radical plan.

Four young members of the Brighouse Swimming Club have been training at Sunny Vale Gardens lake, Hipperholme in preparation for attempting the Morecambe Bay swim this summer. They are Pauline Davis aged 15; Myrna Crowther, 19, Pauline Thorburn,15, and Margaret Castle, 15.
