A judge has warned drug offenders they face even longer prison terms if they are also found in possession of CS spray.

Describing the link between the two as "an unholy alliance," Judge Roger Scott said it had become "a worrying trend."

He added: "There is far too much dealing in heroin within the catchment area of these courts. I do not like CS gas with people involved in drugs offences."

He vowed to mark his concern over the issue by handing out consecutive prison sentences to those involved.

Judge Scott was speaking at Bradford Crown Court as he sentenced 28-year-old David Lumb to a total of 51 months in jail.

Lumb, of Hammond Close, Bierley, Bradford, was convicted by a jury of supplying heroin and possessing the drug with intent to supply. He pleaded guilty to a further charge of possessing a CS canister.

Craig Hassell, prosecuting, said Lumb was arrested in January last year after police saw him pass two wraps of heroin to another man inside a phone box in the centre of Cleckheaton.

A further four wraps and the CS spray were found later when his flat was searched.

For Lumb, it was stated that at the time of the offence his girlfriend was pregnant and they were both making efforts to give up drugs.

He was now the father of a one-year-old son and was drug-free.
