A judge handed out a 14-year jail sentence to an armed robber who carried out two attacks in the space of a few minutes.

After a brave newsagent foiled Andrew Wilson's attempt to steal money from his premises, the 25-year-old confronted a woman in the street and used a knife to try to grab her bag.

The Honorary Recorder of Bradford, Judge Stephen Gullick, was told yesterday that Wilson, of Raynbron Crescent, West Bowling, had previous convictions for armed robberies, including attacks on grocery stores and a self-service petrol station.

Bradford Crown Court heard that during the first incident Wilson went into a newsagents in Thornton Road, Fairweather Green, and pulled out a knife.

He demanded money from shopkeeper Michael Grimshaw, who bravely picked up a piece of metal and told Wilson he was not having any.

Wilson eventually left, telling Mr Grimshaw: "You'll be sorry, mate.''

Within minutes Wilson blocked the path of 35-year-old Jeanette McGee as she walked along nearby Oaks Lane and demanded her bag. He took her purse containing £170.

Wilson pleaded guilty to attempted robbery and robbery last month, but barrister Ian Howard stressed his client was not stealing to fund a drugs habit.

"He tells me these offences came hard on the heels of him learning that his partner was pregnant and that for whatever reason it appears to have upset his equilibrium.''
