CREDIT where credit's due. There was general dismay and dire predictions of traffic chaos when the Craven Herald announced that the A65 was to be dug up and resurfaced around Gargrave and Hellifield.

Those roadworks are to be completed this weekend, well ahead of schedule. And the blokes who have done it leave with nothing but praise.

Hang on - is this really road contractors we are talking about? The ones with a reputation for putting up miles of bollards and disappearing for weeks on end? That's right.

Now newspapers are often accused of seeking out the bad news, concentrating on what goes wrong. But in this instance the very fact that everything has gone right is newsworthy. And we are happy to echo the general view that these contractors deserve a word or two of praise.

Well done lads, the road's lovely.
