A FIRE in Otley public toilets has renewed calls for attendants.
A bin in the Orchard Gate toilets was set alight on Tuesday at 5pm and fire crews were called to attend.
A witness, who did not want to be named, believes that something needs to be done.
"People are always setting fire to it," she said.
"Someone put it out before the fire brigade arrived.
"They are always setting fire to the toilet rolls and do their business on the floor just to make a mess.
"It is usually teenagers. They need to have someone there all the time. There are always empty vodka bottles.
"Last week someone had thrown a tin of treacle all over the floor.
"This is the sort of thing we are having to put up with. We just want something done about it.
"I wouldn't mind paying to use them if they were nice."
Otley Mayor Nigel Francis and councillors Gerard Francis and Norman Harrison held a meeting last week to discuss the state of the toilets.
They are calling for them to be revamped and have an attendant. People would be charged a small fee to use them to fund the cost of an attendant.
They are hoping the revamp could happen within a year and will be meeting soon to discuss the issue further.
