The 30th anniversary of the Harden Children's Gala attracted a huge crowd on an afternoon of perfect weather.

Committee member Peter Bashforth said: "We had an excellent day with perfect weather, a strong procession and an excellent crowd who stayed to the finish.

"There was a lovely atmosphere all afternoon and the many kind compliments suggested we had got it right.

"Our thanks are due to all our helpers and supporters for all they do, before, during and after the gala."

He said the Phoenix New Orleans Parade Band, which led the procession, was an instant hit in the parade and in the field.

Gala Queen Rebecca Burnham opened the gala with her attendants Olivia Mills and Kitty Hammond.

Throughout the afternoon were stalls, games, children's races and a tea tent. Mr Bashforth added: "The children's races were very competitive, but particularly noteworthy was the feat of the girls' caterpillar team.

"The same four girls not only beat the other girls' team to qualify for the race against the winning boys' team, but actually won the Caterpillar Cup as the winners of that race for the third consecutive year."

He said the cup would be presented to a new team next year, because the four girls would be too old to compete.
