A school is celebrating a double award for its pioneering sports project.

SportZone -- an out-of-school venture run by learning mentors and volunteers at Guard House Primary School, Keighley - has received a £5,000 lottery grant.

And Education Extra, a national organisation supporting after-school learning, has awarded the project a certificate of distinction and a £400 prize for the excellence of the scheme and its commitment to the community.

Head teacher Sandra Firm said: "Needless to say we are delighted at this double success for our school, and we are looking forward to our sport scheme going from strength to strength."

The lottery cash, from the Awards for All programme, will support sport camps and other activities for children during the summer holidays -- an initiative called for by the Neighbourhood Action Plan to reduce anti-social behaviour and develop youngsters' talents.

The money will help with out-of-school sports coaching on the estate, the recruitment and training of volunteers, the organisation of multi-cultural tournaments and a special fund to give children from low income families access to sports clubs and events.

Guard House is one of only two schools in Yorkshire to receive the Education Extra prize and is the first to win it in successive years.

Last year learning mentors Cathy Liddle and Sue Hellewell picked up the accolade for their "Special Trips for Special People" reward scheme, which has now been adopted by several other schools.

SportZone has given children access to an ever-widening range of sports and competitions outside school, including rugby, soccer, athletics, rounders, netball, cricket, basketball, fun runs and horse riding.

Sue and Cathy have forged links with organisations such as Keighley Cougars, Bingley Harriers, Yorkshire County Cricket Club and Bradford City FC.

Trips are organised to top-class sporting events and children take part in many of them, including the Junior Great North Run.
