Customers of a Keighley bookshop were spellbound by the magic of Harry Potter at the launch of the latest book to be published.

Staff at Reids Bookshop, Cavendish Street, dressed up in costume to celebrate the first day of the sale of J K Rowling's Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Owner Gerald Brooksbank said all three workers, who had dressed up as characters from the books, had enjoyed the revelry and it had been a success.

He said: "We are very warm but it has gone very well and people have reacted wonderfully to our costumes. We had two frightened dogs, but other than that everyone else thinks it is great."

He said the idea had helped to boost sales, with more than 200 books sold on Saturday.

He added: "No-one else was doing anything so we thought it would be a great idea to wear the costumes as part of the book's launch.

"It has been surprising how many people have come in and actually recognised who we all are."

Mr Brooksbank, who also enjoyed the books, said it was very encouraging that they had inspired children to read.

He added: "They have also made children realise the fun of books and that you do not need computer games or television for fun, but that you can have more fun using your imagination.

"What is great is that the children have been arguing about who will read it first."
