Pupils at a Keighley school are being urged to get on their bikes.

Holy Family Catholic School has been awarded £23,673 to install new cycle lockers to encourage its pupils to cycle to school.

As part of the Government's ongoing commitment to increase levels of cycling, the award was announced as part of more than £2.2 million allotted to coincide with National Bike Week.

School development officer Tim Garthwaite was delighted the school would now have the funds and chance to refurbish its current lockers.

He said: "The award is excellent news.

"In terms of all the proposed building work on the car park, it is getting a little bit overwhelming.

"But we have a good architect on our team and we hope to get this done as soon as possible.

"The new lockers are something to enhance the quality of the school and enhance the quality of the life of the children and get stuck into the community."

He said the school had applied for the grant to encourage pupils to start cycling to school again.

Mr Garthwaite added: "At present the lockers are just a container.

"We have a significant number of staff who cycle, but the children have begun to vote with their feet.

"Obviously it is not currently the best type of shelter and it is not unknown for children who have been playing football to find all the teachers who have keys have gone home.

"So they have to go to home on the bus or walk."

Transport Minister Kim Howells said: "It is very encouraging to have received so many great ideas to increase cycling.

"This in itself should demonstrate to local authorities just how much unmet demand there currently is at local level for low cost cycling facilities.

"I believe that this financial boost will have a significant impact in encouraging more cycling, helping to ease local congestion and improve public health."

These were the second round of awards made by Department of Transport's Cycling Projects Fund, which has been doubled because of the number and quality of bids received.
