A school has scrapped bookings for a series of meetings planned by Keighley Islamic Society following a row over a promotional flyer.
The advertising card, which appears to depict New York's Twin Towers ablaze, has been slammed as "offensive propaganda". Yesterday Greenhead High School -- which was to be the venue for the meetings on July 8, 9 and 10 -- said it had cancelled the booking. Keighley Islamic Society said the photograph featured was not of the Twin Towers, but admitted that the choice of image was inappropriate.
Father of two Eddie Laughlin, from Riddlesden, who was handed the leaflet in Bradford, said the pictures were totally inappropriate and offensive in their promotion of Islamic conversion.
Greenhead chairman of governors Alan Watkinson said the booking for the meetings had been made in the name of Keighley Asian Sports Association as a "sports event", and not as advertised. He added: "We have therefore cancelled the booking, notified the person who made it and will be reimbursing him accordingly. This event will not take place on our premises."
Taj Sakeen, secretary of Keighley Islamic Society, said: "The idea behind the cards was to show that the worldly affairs are the way towards hell. The image on the posters is not of the Twin Towers, it is of some other office blocks featured on the front cover of a magazine."
