The future of Haworth Riding for the Disabled was secured yesterday when councillors passed plans to allow a static caravan on the stable's site.

The plans, which had been rejected in March, were re-submitted as part of a campaign by volunteers at Vale Mill Stables.

In March the plans were turned down after officials decided there were not the very special circumstances required by law to develop green belt land.

However, volunteers from the stables charity -- run by Jackie Butterfield -- set out yesterday to show councillors the value of the facility.

Nine-year-old Jack Aggus addressed the panel: "I have spina bifada and I am an excellent rider. It would be awful if I couldn't keep riding. Please help Jackie keep the stables open."

His mother Anne explained the multiple benefits of riding for people with all kinds of disabilities.

Councillor Barry Thorne, speaking on behalf of the charity, said: "In some ways this is Keighley's answer to swimming with dolphins. It is a charity for therapeutic riding for the disabled.

"It is a tiny caravan on the whole green belt. Sometimes we need to waive, bend and adapt the rules. Vote with your hearts, logic and for the disabled."

The application -- which had been recommended for refusal -- was passed unanimously by the panel.

Councillors agreed that the continuation of the only such resource for disabled people across the area should be supported and that the safety of the animals was also an issue.

The plans were passed with the conditions that the caravan only be allowed on the site while it is being used for the purpose of the Riding for the Disabled group, and that there be a review in ten years.

Landscaping will also be addressed. After the meeting Mrs Butterfield said: "I am over the moon. It means we can carry on with the stables. I am in shock and really, really pleased."
