A CRAVEN primary school played host to four American visitors, the direct descendants of the founder of the school.
John Hewitt, a resident of Washington, made the trip to Threshfield Primary School with his two daughters and granddaughter.
His mission was to see the school his ancestor Matthew Hewitt had founded with a will request in 1600. His money was to provide tutoring of Latin and English grammar.
Matthew Hewitt was born at Linton and attended Burnsall School. After attending college where he gained a BA and MA, he went on to become vicar at Gargrave and Linton.
The American quartet were welcomed by the school which gave them a guided tour and provided a buffet lunch.
John Hewitt, now 74, said he had always wanted to visit the Dales to see the school his forefather had ordered to be built.
Headteacher Helen Jarvis said she was delighted the Hewitts had made the journey and pleased she was able to share with them the history of the school.
